Sun Moon Lake

Unity, SketchUp

A Virtual Landscape

This project is an exploration of 3D terrain design, inspired by the iconic geography of Taiwan’s Sun Moon Lake.

Rather than focusing on architectural accuracy, my goal was to create a functional virtual landscape—a digital environment designed specifically for avatar navigation and spatial flow.

Sculpting the World

The heart of this project is the custom-sculpted terrain. Using Unity, I shaped the land to mirror the natural curves of the lake’s shoreline and surrounding hills.

To populate the scene, I imported 3D structures from SketchUp, focusing on environment assembly—positioning and scaling these elements to create a cohesive sense of place within my custom world.

Design vs. Reality

In reality, Sun Moon Lake is a complex natural wonder. In this model, it is reimagined as a traversable “digital sandbox”:

    • The Terrain: I prioritized a smooth, stylized layout to ensure an avatar could move through the space without obstacles.
    • Asset Integration: By blending my sculpted terrain with imported architectural assets, I practiced the art of level dressing—balancing natural landforms with man-made structures.
    • A Unique Perspective: This virtual landscape offers a bird’s-eye view of the lake’s layout, revealing the “bones” of the environment in a way that is impossible to see from the ground.
